“Windsor’s Palisado Cemetery is conveniently located across the street from Windsor Historical Society, at 69 Palisado Ave., next to First Church in Windsor. The cemetery is owned and maintained by the First School Society, which also manages Windsor’s Riverside Cemetery.
The oldest cemetery in Windsor, it also is home to Connecticut’s oldest surviving gravestone, that of Rev. Ephraim Huit, who died in 1644. Unfortunately, most people who died in the 17th century and the early-18th century do not have extant graves. Today, only 21 17th-century graves still stand and are legible.”

“The cemetery is home to several architecturally significant buildings, the office building, the receiving vault and the Belmont Chapel. Work on the cemetery office on Warner Street, designed by Herbert Wilson began in 1902. The one-and-a-half story brick structure (see photo) with a broad arched entrance and a central clock tower was finally opened in 1921 after a redesign to eliminate cracks in the clock tower.
Another important building was a receiving vault (see photo below) built to temporarily store bodies in winter months when the ground is too frozen to dig a permanent grave. It was designed by Edwin Wilbar in 1894 in a temple form. It fell into disrepair and was finally demolished in 1985.
The August Belmont Memorial Chapel was commissioned by August Belmont in 1886 and deeded to the Island Cemetery for public use in 1888.”

“First Parish Burial Ground (1644) is the earliest established public Gloucester cemetery in need of restoration and displaying red sandstone, slate, marble, granite and unmarked granite field stone gravestones plus above and below ground tombs. This cemetery is not wheelchair accessible, and the ground is uneven with sloping elevations.
One below ground tomb in very good shape has been uncovered and opened. This cemetery is the resting place for Gloucester's earliest settlers and founding families: sea captains, war veterans, merchants, widows, and children.
Parking is on the grass field of Oval Playground located at 92 Centennial Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930. As you approach the playground, please drive slowly through the family neighborhood of Harvard Street and Morton Place.

“Copp Cemetery is probably our most historic cemetery and has the first documented burial in 1776.
Mary Butler, who married Lt. Ebenezer Eastman, gained fame when she took her son and rode from Gilmanton to Cambridge, MA to learn the fate of her husband after the Battle of Bunker Hill. Both and their family are buried here. There were some stones stolen from the cemetery and eventually made their way to Sturbridge Village and they were recovered and returned to our town.”

“The Town of Canton, Maine celebrated their Bicentennial in 2021. In recognition of our forefathers in 2019 four ladies started cleaning the stones of the movers and shakers of the day. We hired a company to repair stones in 2019 and 2020. They taught us many of the techniques but as there are now only three of us involved and Canton has 14 cemeteries. Although we have cleaned over 600 stones and repaired numerous others, we simply can’t keep up. This cemetery is located on an extremely busy road with high visibility; it also has a large number of Civil War veterans buried there.”

“Maple Hill Cemetery was established as a graveyard adjoining the first church in Dorset, a log church dubbed "the Lord's Barn" built about 1773. The oldest headstone is dated September 9, 1772. The church building was moved to Church Street in 1797 but the cemetery stayed where it was. Maple Hill Cemetery was expanded in 1865 and again in 1919 to its present 6.6 acres, and is now almost fully utilized but for a new 1.1 acre "Southern Annex" that was obtained in 1984 and is currently being integrated with the rest of the site, all about one half mile south of Dorset village along Route 30.”

“Our cemetery has been in existence since 1863. We have Itaro Kono, founder of the first dojo in America and one of P. T. Barnum's acts in the travelling circus; Peter Herdic, the inventor of the taxi cab and one of the richest lumbermen from the time when Williamsport had THE MOST millionaires per capita in THE ENTIRE WORLD! Almost all of these rich lumbermen are buried here. We have the founder of Lycoming County (William Hepburn), the founder of the oldest band in America (Daniel Repasz), and many more.
With over 55,000 burials and 20 miles of road, we have so much history and so many stones in need of repair. Learning how to do this for our community will allow family members to repair their stones, and for us to begin stone repairs in our cemetery. It will also allow our group of avid FindAGrave users fix stones in many of the local cemeteries they work with as well. Please consider us. We would be honored.“

“Boxwood Cemetery, founded in 1850, is conveniently located just twenty minutes north of the New York State Thruway (Route 90). It is located between the population centers of Buffalo and Rochester. Medina is a beautiful village on the Erie Canal that has a proud history and a bright future. It is not only a day trip destination for Western New Yorkers, it is also becoming a place for weekend get-aways. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, historical sites and museums, and outdoor recreational activities as well as overnight accommodations for anyone coming from out-of-town.
The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a representative example of the three major cemetery movements – rural, lawn park, and memorial park. The Friends of Boxwood Cemetery was created a couple of years ago with the mission of “Promoting and conserving Boxwood Cemetery to honor past generations for future generations.”
Since its inception, the Friends of Boxwood Cemetery has worked hard to begin the restoration process. This has been done through promoting the cemetery with a book about its history and occupants, events such as Plants in the Cemetery, Headstone Cleaning seminars (using Atlas products), Boxwood at Night, and walking tours. All of these have helped raise awareness of the needs of the cemetery. The funds raised have helped us to reset some of the headstones and also pay for the restoration of the stained-glass window in the chapel.
We have partnered with the local historical society, businesses, and the school district to bring the history of the cemetery to life and to clean up the cemetery. The cemetery is not only a resting place for the departed, it is a place that many people go to exercise, learn, and reflect.”

“Much of the land in South Brooklyn was owned by a man named Warren Young (1787-1832). When the area began to be settled, he donated a portion of his land for the civic purpose of a cemetery. He himself is buried in Brookmere and his monument states that he is the donor of the cemetery. The first person buried in Brookmere was a child named Bertha Albers. The cemetery records list her as the first burial and then Carl and Sylvia Albers as the next two... no dates are given but are prior to 1832. The first burial that was officially recorded was 1843. There are approximately 3,551 burials in Brookmere.
Brookmere Cemetery has two noteworthy features. The first is the presence of epitaphs in the German language indicating the nationality of many of the early settlers in this area. The second is the great number of early family names which are outstanding because many of them are current street names.
Many of the monuments in this cemetery showcase the fine art of the stonecutters of that period. The antique forms are showcased in the cloak-covered urn, the scroll, the joined hands (symbolic of the union of God and man), and the hand pointing to a star (symbolic of the hand of God pointing us toward heaven). Visitors are often drawn to the Selover plot which is surrounded by a wrought iron fence decorated with chain and bells. Legend has it that the bells fend off evil spirits.
Brookmere has many veterans buried here from the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, WWI and WWII. They are honored yearly in an official ceremony located at the veteran's memorial in the cemetery.
There is much history in this cemetery and hence, many stories of the people who call Brookmere their final resting place. It is crucial that we maintain the cemetery and repair the headstones that have fallen into disrepair and honor their memories with dignity and respect.”

“The Pioneer Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in South Central Kentucky and the first public burial ground in Warren County. Notable burials include historic military officials and Reverend Joseph Lapsley, a friend of President Thomas Jefferson's and founder the the Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green in 1819. Pioneer is the original location of the church. Kinlock is one of the oldest private estates in Warren County. The house was originally built by a Revolutionary War soldier circa 1814, modified by Rumsey Skiles in 1842. The grave cover on site is one of the oldest private cemeteries in South Central Kentucky, but it is in need of significant repair.”

“A little background on St. Joseph… It's located 50 minutes north of Kansas City and sits along the Missouri River. Initially, the "town" was settled and founded by a fur trader, Joseph Robidoux. Shortly, thereafter it became a trading post and point of departure/river crossing for the California/Oregon Trail. Next, the Pony Express started here in 1860 and the outlaw Jesse James "ended" here in 1882. As you can see, there is an incredible amount of rich and well-preserved history in St. Joseph.
Mount Mora Cemetery is a historical site which was established in 1851, sits on twenty acres, and is the oldest cemetery in the city. Mount Mora is the final resting place for three Missouri governors, a Pony Express riders, numerous Civil War veterans (both sides), many of the first and most prominent setters in Northwest Missouri, as well as countless common citizens. As you can imagine, there are numerous tablets, obelisks and over twenty mausoleums.”

“Scattered wooden markers, tall marble obelisks, and iron fences enclosing family plots memorialize the pioneers who rest in this early burial ground. Lewis and Clark County established the cemetery in 1870. In 1875, remains from the original mining camp cemetery on Warren Street were disinterred and moved to Benton Avenue; a few of these graves date to the 1860s. Benton Avenue then became Helena’s main nonsectarian, Protestant burial ground. Frequent interments continued through the 1890s. Among the prominent Helenans buried here are John Kinna, Helena’s first mayor; Lewis Reeder, the builder of Reeder’s Alley; and Edwin Toole, brother of the state’s first governor. Masons, a cornerstone of the state's foundation, are a strong presence in the northeast section.”

“This cemetery, the first in Douglas, is located outside of town and is filled with our pioneer residents. Even though many of the graves were moved to the newer cemetery in later years, the remaining stones are unique and historic to our area. The property this cemetery is located on was originally part of the Fort Fetterman Military Reservation and less than 400 feet away are swales from the Oregon Trail (Child's Trail). It is in desperate need of some preservation and restoration and we would welcome the help.”

“Evergreen Cemetery was established shortly after the town was founded in 1871, and deeded to the City of Colorado Springs in 1875 by city founder, General William Jackson Palmer. As such, 220-acre Evergreen Cemetery enjoys a unique historical tie to the Colorado Springs community. In 1993, Evergreen was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, only the second cemetery in the state to receive such an honor.”

“The Sunnyside Cemetery is unique in that its residents are granted only the "surface ground." Mining rights take over the deeper ground, where one finds portions of the mining claims called the Hattie W. lode, the Cemetery lode, the Robert E. Lee lode, and the Anny B. lode, all now inactive gold mines. One wonders if the residents could indeed "rest in peace," with all the rumblings of mining that once came from below. Hundreds of graves are unmarked or are guarded by wooden markers from which all inscription has disappeared. The many fenced areas reserved for burials of fraternal society members speak to the community's strong social structure. The earliest recorded burial is that of 3-year-old Maggie Ferrans, who died April 26, 1891.
Sunnyside Cemetery is located west of Victor on County Road 87. From Victor Avenue, turn west at Seventh Street on the southwest end of Victor. Drive about 0.9 mile down the dirt road to the entrance of the cemetery. This year’s tours focus on the Woodmen of the World.”

“The Victor Lowell Thomas Museum is an original 1899 building that houses two floors of artifacts, books, exhibits and photographs depicting the life in Victor from its beginnings to the heyday of gold mining. See our diamond dust mirror, large collection of mining artifacts, themed-rooms, and old-fashioned doctor's office! Celebrating 65 years in 2024!”

“Built in 1870, the Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of only four territorial prisons open to the public today. During its 101 years of operation, the site saw escapes, scandals and the effects of Boise’s transition from the “wild west” to a mid-20th century capital city. Step inside the four walls of the prison yard and imagine a life of confinement as steel doors close behind you.”
