“First Parish Burial Ground (1644) is the earliest established public Gloucester cemetery in need of restoration and displaying red sandstone, slate, marble, granite and unmarked granite field stone gravestones plus above and below ground tombs. This cemetery is not wheelchair accessible, and the ground is uneven with sloping elevations.

One below ground tomb in very good shape has been uncovered and opened. This cemetery is the resting place for Gloucester's earliest settlers and founding families: sea captains, war veterans, merchants, widows, and children.

Parking is on the grass field of Oval Playground located at 92 Centennial Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930. As you approach the playground, please drive slowly through the family neighborhood of Harvard Street and Morton Place.

Wear old clothes & sturdy shoes, bring a hat, work/gardening gloves, safety glasses, lunch, and water. Water and cookies will be available.  More details on this one-day free hands-on restoration event can be found at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/free-gloucester-cemetery-restoration-hands-on-event-tickets-952821393437

Located on Cape Ann, Gloucester celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2023. The city is part of the Essex National Heritage Area and Coastal Scenic Byway. As a visitor you will enjoy a lovely and lively seaport with recreational, culinary, and historic opportunities.

I can promise 48 State Tour ample local publicity in newspapers and other media outlets if they choose First Parish Burial Ground as a 2024 restoration site.”
