The land for the cemetery was first owned by John Martin of Swansea. John willed it to his son Ephraim. Ephraim gave it to his son Benjamin who sold it to his brother Samuel.  Samuel separates his land from the Cemetery in a deed in 1755. It should be noted that the Martin family belonged to the Baptist Church in Swansea up until 1733. In 1732 a Baptist Church was formed in Rehoboth.  There are many elders and ministers from the Baptist Churches buried in this Cemetery.

Our most famous stone is that of Simeon Martin. Simeon Martin has a table stone which is said to have the longest epitaph in America. The table stone was repaired and preserved in 2013 by Jonathan Appell.

The earliest proven burial is that of John Ormsbee who died in 1716.  It has been reported through family histories that Robert Wheaton is buried here. Robert Died in 1696, though there is no marked stone for him. He is said to be buried near his son Ephraim Wheaton.

Another possible early burial is that of Daniel Ormsbee, son of Thomas, who died in 1689. There is no marked stone for young Daniel.

The land the cemetery is situated on is not suitable for farming. It is surrounded by a deep gorge .  A farmer would have to move his plow down the road to access the land to farm it.  The land was formed by a glacier when it melted and deposited the mound of earth.

Pine Hill Cemetery is a garden style cemetery and contains a significant number of veterans and other burials.  For example, there are 313 veterans of the American Civil War interred at Pine Hill Cemetery.

There many hazardous monuments, significant number of historic value, leaners, in fragments, etc.  A lot of historic and beautiful Victorian marble, many sandstone obelisks, and more!

The West District Cemetery, established in Chester, Connecticut, in 1813, is between Cedar Lake Road on the west and the lake on the east. About Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery

The city cemetery was first located at the corner of East Market St. and North Washington Street, this  is now the location of City Hall that was built in 1893 and is still used as City Hall.

The first recorded burial at this location was the son of Col. Zebulon Butler in 1773. Some of the body’s from this cemetery were moved in the 1856 to Hollenback cemetery. The remainder of the bodies were moved to the new location for the Wilkes- Barre City Cemetery when it opened in 1870 and it’s latest burial was June 10,2023.

Henry Brown a prominent free Black man from Wilkes-Barre risked his life, he was the conductor of the Underground Railroad in the early 1800s using his hay wagon to transport them he helped them find freedom. When he died in 1884 he was buried in the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery without a grave marker. On August 12,2023 all that will change when there will be a Grave Marking Ceremony for Henry Brown, thanks to the efforts of a few local groups that raised enough money to purchase a marker for him.

Presbyterian Church in Morristown, most local people know it informally as the Presbyterian Church on the Green, because it is right on the town green in the heart of downtown Morristown!

Parking: There is some parking right next to the burying yard, but it is limited and might not be sufficient if we get a big crowd (which it appears we will have).  This is an urban church, so parking is more of a challenge and generally is not free.  Two nearby parking lots are 1) a large city lot with metered spaces at 12 Wilmot Street, Morristown and 2) a large parking garage underneath a large office building right next door called Headquarters Plaza.

“Valley Cemetery is a historic cemetery in Douglas County, NE that dates back to 1881. We have a cemetery board of 6 members and 2 adjunct members that work hard on genealogy and researching the interred to learn more about the history of our town. However, with historic monuments and gravestones comes wear and tear from age and the elements that we are inexperienced in repairing. Our town also had a flood in 2018, and others in the past, that no doubt may have contributed to the current state of some of our historic stones and some more current.”

About Richmond Cemetery
(scroll for Google + Parking Maps)

Richmond Cemetery was officially founded in 1873. Previously an apple orchard, it was then sold as a burial ground. Richmond cemetery has some extensive history in the cemetery both locally and on a national level. It is the final resting place for Austin King; Missouri Governor and congressman, Charles Mansur; Mo Representative, Bob Ford and his brother Charlie; members of the notorious Jesse James gang. Bob is the man who shot and killed Jesse James in the back, and David Whitmer;  A member of the Whitmer family, he was one of three witnesses to offer testimony regarding the translation of the Book of Mormon and to witness the engravings of the "golden plates."

This land was purchased in 1866 by African American men on behalf of Union Benevolent Society #5. Formerly used as the county's fairgrounds, this approximately 5-acre site became the first burial ground owned and created by local Black people for their own loved ones. Many people buried here were formerly enslaved - including at least a dozen men who served in the US Colored Troops during the Civil War. Over time, the cemetery has been known as UBC (Union Benevolent Cemetery), East End Cemetery, the colored cemetery, and Vine Street Cemetery. In 1913, the City of Hopkinsville established a city cemetery for Black residents, and this cemetery began to be used less and less. Eventually, the Union Benevolent Society ceased to exist, and the site was left abandoned and became completely overgrown. Extensive efforts by county officials initiated the clean-up of the site in 2015. The City of Hopkinsville claimed ownership and rededicated the cemetery on July 10, 2018. Since then, the cemetery has been better maintained but still needs additional restoration efforts.

“The City Cemetery is the oldest continuously operated public cemetery in Nashville. On March 9, 1820, the Mayor of Nashville and the Aldermen purchased from Richard Cross four acres of land located “on the plains, south of town, for its burying ground.” The cemetery opened on January 1, 1822. Fourteen years later the cemetery had outgrown its original site and more acres were acquired. By 1850 the cemetery was the final resting place for over 11,000 people of every race, religion and economic status. Since the opening, there have been 20,000 interments in the City Cemetery. Over the years, there have been removals including the Civil War Federal soldiers to the National Cemetery, Gallatin Pike, C.S.A. soldiers to the Confederate Circle at Mt. Olivet, and the relocation of graves to new family lots in Mt. Olivet Cemetery after the Civil War.

Four of Nashville’s first settlers, James Robertson, founder of Nashville, and his wife Charlotte Reeves Robertson, and John and Ann Robertson Cockrill; American Revolutionary War soldiers Lipscomb Norvell, Joel Lewis, Anthony Foster; four Confederate generals: Felix Zollicoffer, Bushrod Johnson, Richard Ewell, and Samuel Read Anderson; the man who named the American flag “Old Glory,” Captain William Driver; Union Navy Commodore Paul Shirley; a Tennessee Governor, William Carroll; 15 mayors of Nashville, and two of the original Fisk Jubilee Singers, Mabel Lewis Imes and Ella Sheppard Moore, also many slaves and free persons of color interred prior to the Civil War, are among those buried in the small and peaceful cemetery, The City Cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 because of its historical and architectural significance.”

Chestnut St Cemetery is a historical cemetery dating back to the 1800’s and draws many tourists in the area. It has beautiful artwork in its stones and ornamental ironwork. Chestnut Street is also home the oldest slate grave in Florida!

Chestnut Street cemetery was developed in the 1820s and is the final resting place for many of Apalachicola’s prominent citizens, including a botanist and steamer captains. It has classic Southern charm with the live oaks, Spanish moss, and exclusive Chapman oaks. It’s monuments include a zinc and a slate monument. The cemetery is an amazing example of the artistry of the time with numerous exquisitely carved marble and granite monuments.

The Cemetery committee will provide coffee and water, and restrooms are located at the Piggley Wiggley or downtown Apalachicola!

Rose Hill Cemetery was established for the operatives of Piedmont Manufacturing Co. in 1876. Piedmont Manufacturing was one of the largest textile mills in the world. (learn more about Piedmont Manufacturing here!) One of the prominent burials was Albert Smith Rowell and his family. He served as a postmaster, mill supervisor, and editor for the town newspaper.

Rose Hill has over 2,000 burials and still continues to offer an affordable burial location for the Piedmont community. The headstones and burial markers found at Rosehill are very diverse! Check the Find A Grave to learn more.
