“Boxwood Cemetery, founded in 1850, is conveniently located just twenty minutes north of the New York State Thruway (Route 90). It is located between the population centers of Buffalo and Rochester. Medina is a beautiful village on the Erie Canal that has a proud history and a bright future. It is not only a day trip destination for Western New Yorkers, it is also becoming a place for weekend get-aways. There are plenty of restaurants, shops, historical sites and museums, and outdoor recreational activities as well as overnight accommodations for anyone coming from out-of-town.

The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a representative example of the three major cemetery movements – rural, lawn park, and memorial park. The Friends of Boxwood Cemetery was created a couple of years ago with the mission of “Promoting and conserving Boxwood Cemetery to honor past generations for future generations.”

Since its inception, the Friends of Boxwood Cemetery has worked hard to begin the restoration process. This has been done through promoting the cemetery with a book about its history and occupants, events such as Plants in the Cemetery, Headstone Cleaning seminars (using Atlas products), Boxwood at Night, and walking tours. All of these have helped raise awareness of the needs of the cemetery. The funds raised have helped us to reset some of the headstones and also pay for the restoration of the stained-glass window in the chapel.

We have partnered with the local historical society, businesses, and the school district to bring the history of the cemetery to life and to clean up the cemetery. The cemetery is not only a resting place for the departed, it is a place that many people go to exercise, learn, and reflect.”
