“Ross Cemetery was established in 1842, when John McDonald Ross, oldest son of Lewis and Fanny (Holt) Ross, was buried at the site. Recently returned to the Cherokee Nation from school in the East, young Ross became ill. On his death bed, he requested that he be buried on the nearby hilltop, overlooking the various homesites where his family members resided. He was 21 years old. Also interred in Ross Cemetery are John McDonald Ross’s sister, Minerva (Ross) Murrell of Hunter’s Home, their parents, Lewis (Cherokee Nation Treasurer) and Fanny Ross, their uncle, Principal Chief John Ross, and many other Ross and Murrell relatives.”
