“Our cemetery was founded in 1806 and is among the oldest public cemeteries in America that is still in continual use today. We have approximately 22,000 burials, most before 1925, with between 7,000 & 8,000 stones on the property. Among our permanent residents are 2,200 Civil War soldiers, 13,000 early African American burials, including many who were enslaved, and at least 1/3 of our overall population is comprised of children under the age of 6. We are home to Civil Rights leaders, educators, politicians, etc., and our grounds are managed by the Southern Memorial Association, a 501c3 non profit.

We are also 127-acre public garden, Level II accredited arboretum, and the largest public collection of antique roses on the eastern seaboard. We have 5 museum exhibits on our grounds, including a Victorian mourning customs museum, WWI era train station, and Victorian Medical Museum. We also host many history and horticultural education tours throughout the year, including school field trips, special interest groups, and our two largest events: our annual Antique Rose Sale, and our annual Candlelight Tours which is a living history program featuring actors who portray our cemetery residents.”
