“Fifteen-and-one-half acres, known as Green’s Battery during the Civil War, were purchased in 1876 to establish a private cemetery for people of moderate means. An act of the North Carolina General Assembly incorporated the Bellevue Cemetery Company as a capital stock company in January 1877. Bellevue now contains thirty acres.”
