About

Join the Kentucky Trust for Historic Preservation in partnership with the Madison County Historical Society and monument conservator Jon Appell and assistant, local drystone mason Stuart Joynt, for an opportunity to learn from a leading expert in the field for a one-day free historic gravestone preservation workshop at the Old Soldiers Cemetery of Richmond. This workshop will provide instruction in general best practices for preservation of historic cemetery gravestones and their care. Participants will gain a perspective of historic monument types and traditional materials then move on to techniques for cleaning, repair and conservation of historic gravestones.

A great opportunity for beginners, this workshop will be led through demonstration and hands on activity. Participants may choose to actively practice techniques with the instructor during the workshop.

This is a free event, but registration is required and space is limited. Please wear old clothes, bring a mask as we will be working with cleaners and dusty materials, gloves, and a sack lunch.

Old Soldiers Cemetery in Richmond, KY

There is must yet to discover about the Old Soldiers Cemetery located at 600 Four Mile Rd. The earliest known graves are believed to date to 1849, with many known Civil War soldier burials. Since the Civil War the cemetery has primarily served as an African American Cemetery, but may date to much earlier, this history is to be discovered and this workshop will help inform more about the legacy of the Cemetery.
