Harper Ferry, 48 State Tour, 2021

Since 1782

Standing on this hillside Thomas Jefferson called the scene "...one of the most stupendous in nature... worth a voyage across the Atlantic".

A year earlier Robert Harper, the founder of Harpers Ferry, had shared that sentiment and in 1782 set aside four acres of the hillside for a cemetery where Harper, his family and many others are now buried. Over two centuries later the view from Harper Cemetery remains one of the most stupendous in nature and burial sites are still available.

If you don't want to stay that long, the cemetery is easily accessible from multiple routes and should not be missed by anyone visiting Harpers Ferry.
