Cemetery Background/Info
Founded in 1855, Mount Moriah Cemetery in Southwest Philadelphia and Yeadon remains one
of the most expansive and significant examples of the 19th-century '“garden cemetery” movement. Originally designed as a picturesque, park-like sanctuary for the public, the site served as the premier final resting place for Philadelphia’s elite, military heroes, and community leaders. However, by the late 20th century, the cemetery fell into a period of severe neglect and abandonment, eventually leading to a court-ordered closure in 2011. Since that time, the Friends of Mount Moriah Cemetery (FOMMCI) have led a monumental grassroots effort to reclaim the grounds, systematically restoring the historic landscape and preserving the site’s vital historical legacy.
