Cemetery Background/Info
Oakwood Cemetery is a historic 18.5-acre rural cemetery established in 1852 near the center of Niagara Falls, New York, just a short distance from the Niagara River and the falls themselves. It was designed by civil engineer Theodore D. Judah (who also designed the Transcontinental Railway) and reflects the Rural Cemetery Movement, with curving roads, scenic paths, and a park-like landscape that provides a peaceful green space within the city. The cemetery contains roughly 22,000 burials and the graves of many individuals important to the early development of Niagara Falls, including members of the prominent Porter family who helped found the community.
One of its most notable attractions is “Strangers’ Rest,” where several Niagara Falls daredevils are buried, including Annie Edson Taylor, the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel in 1901. Other unique features include historic architecture such as the 1913 Green & Wicks mausoleum, a Gothic Revival vault/crematorium, and a variety of 19th- and early 20th-century monuments that reflect changing funerary art and symbolism. Located close to Niagara Falls State Park, the Niagara Gorge, and nearby historic neighborhoods, Oakwood Cemetery serves as both a historic landmark and a cultural landscape connected to the broader history of Niagara Falls.
