Background Info
The Cliffside Presbyterian Church was organized in 1811 with burials in the graveyard starting about 1814. The early ministers are buried here with historic notes stating that Andrew Poage was buried at the pulpit of the first log cabin church. The first platting of the cemetery took place in 1831. The first item you see is a holding vault built into the hill. The exact age is unknown but is noted on WPA maps of the mid1930’s.
This historic cemetery has many burials of note:
Richard Randolph Junior, nephew of John Randolph of the Randolph Slave Emancipation, left money in his will to former family-owned slaves.
Benjamin Whiteman pioneer, early politician, and colonial veteran, petitioned to have the county line moved so that his home would stay in Greene County when Clark County was formed in 1818.
Letitia Phillips Davis was a female present at the naming of the county seat. When there was a tie in voting, she was allowed to break the tie selecting the name of the county seat as Xenia.
About 200 veterans representing every conflict are buried here. The Clifton Mill is one of the few water-powered mills still operating in the US. The first owner/builder, Owen Davis (1751-1818), as well as two other owner/operators of the mill are here.
