Cemetery Background/Info
Alton Cemetery , incorporated in 1835, is a beautifully landscaped burial ground for citizens of a very walk of life from pauper to business magnate. Included are Elijah P. Lovejoy, abolitionist newspaper publisher who was murdered by a pro slavery mob in 1837, and Col. Stephen Long, explorer, surveyor and cartographer and Chief Topographical Engineer of the U. S. Army. Also included are former slaves, immigrants from many countries, the rich and the poor. The cemetery is also home to the tallest monument in Illinois dedicated to Rev Lovejoy.
